Hollywood First Movie

Hollywood has a long history. There are thousands of movies made since the Hollywood started but do you know which was the first one?

The Hollywood movie which was released was “The Old California” it was released on 10th march, 1910. The shooting started from 1908 in Chicago and end on 1910 in California. This means that Los Angeles was not the city where Hollywood started. The total running time of the movie was only 17mins, thus it is mostly regarded as a short film. The director DW. Griffith might have thought that 17mins are enough to show any story. So which was the first full length feature film made in Hollywood? We will come to that at the end of this blog but first let’s know more about The Old California.

The Old California was written by Stonner E. V. Taylor. He also wrote the screenplay of the movie. It was a silent film as there were no equipments to record sound at that time even in the first hollywood movie with sound has used the sounds from natural resources like birds, animals, waterfalls, etc.

The Old California was shot in America but it showed Mexican melodrama, this movie is also known as Spanish Senorita. The story of the movie is about that time when Mexican independence was announced in California.

Interestingly, till 6th May, 2004 people believed that, “The Squaman” released in 1914 was the first Hollywood film, this was because all the documents related to, “The Old California” were lost but when it was shown at Beverly Hills film festival in 2004 people came to know about this movie.

But if we take about the first movie made in Hollywood then it was not The Old California but it was, “The Count Of Monte Cristo” but it never got released so ultimately, “The Old California was regarded as the first hollywood movie.

Now, since the running time of The Old California was only 17mins so it is mostly regarded as a short film. The first full length Hollywood feature film was, “The Squaman” with a running time of 1 hrs and 14 minutes. It was released in 1914. It was silent film.
